Hamilton School District Tackles IAQ & Energy Efficiency

Wisconsin school district utilizes ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI) to improve indoor air quality (IAQ), increase energy efficiency and reduce maintenance costs.

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), “Poor indoor air quality (IAQ) can cause illness requiring absence from school, and can cause acute health symptoms that decrease performance while at school. In addition, recent data suggest that poor IAQ can reduce a person’s ability to perform specific mental tasks requiring concentration, calculation, or memory.”

One school district that is doing something about IAQ that students, teachers and faculty are exposed to on a daily basis is the Hamilton School District in Sussex, Wisconsin. Recently, the school district implemented additional efforts to improve the air quality by contacting the IAQ professionals at Filtration Concepts, Inc. Nick Orlando from Filtration Concepts worked directly with the school district’s Manager of Building and Grounds, Jeff Grove, to design an advanced air cleaning system for the district.

Seven school district buildings and 41 air handling units are being outfitted with UVGI products manufactured by UltraViolet Devices, Inc. (UVDI) of Valencia, CA. The UVGI systems disinfect mold, bacteria and viruses growing on HVAC system surfaces resulting in improved IAQ while reducing energy consumption and maintenance costs.

The plan that Filtration Concepts developed for the school district involves installing UVDI’s V-RAY Full Output and V-MOD ultraviolet (UV) technologies. “In addition to improving the indoor air quality at the schools, the V-RAY and V-MOD units will provide continuous cleaning of HVAC systems which improves energy consumption and lowers maintenance costs,” reported Orlando. “This technology, developed by UVDI, will quickly pay for itself in energy savings and reduced absenteeism.
