Cisco Systems and Hanoi University of Technology Collaborate on Networking Research and Development

HANOI, Vietnam, April 21, 2006 - The Hanoi University of Technology (HUT) and Cisco Systems® today launched a Networking Research and Development (R&D) Laboratory that will focus on network security, a collaboration that is being sponsored by the Cisco® University Research Program (URP).
The guests of honour at the opening ceremony included His Excellency Professor, Doctor of Science Tran Van Nhung, Vice Minister of the Ministry of Training and Education; Professor Hoang Ba Chu, the university’s rector; and James Chia, general director of Cisco Systems Vietnam.

The Networking R&D Lab will be operated by Bach Khoa Networking Academy in HUT, the first regional-level Cisco Networking Academy® program in Vietnam. The lab is also the first time that Cisco’s URP is sponsoring R&D in Vietnam.

Dedicated to the collaboration with researchers at universities and other research organizations around the globe, Cisco’s URP facilitates the development of ideas and technologies and encourages innovation in networking. The URP operates by soliciting research proposals, subjecting them to stringent peer review, before granting funds to support those deemed most worthy.

“Cisco is excited about the potential of the young engineering talent in Vietnam, and this initiative is one of our efforts to nurture that talent. This builds on the success of the Cisco Networking Academy program, which has trained thousands of young Vietnamese in networking skills. The URP program will bring in an added dimension of international exposure for the researchers in HUT, helping to to increase the quality of its research work. Cisco will in turn benefit as the work done in HUT may be used to enhance the features in Cisco’s products,” said Chia.

As a business having a responsibility to its community, Cisco Systems Vietnam is committed to contributing to the development of the IT industry in Vietnam. Cisco always attaches special importance to education and considers it as key area where Cisco can contribute to communities in the most meaningful and effective way.

“The Networking R&D Lab is the first true world-class communications lab in Vietnam. Our teachers and researchers will have good opportunities to access international research projects and lab equipment. We are confident that this joint research project will be successful and benefit not just HUT and Cisco, but the whole of Vietnam as well,” said Hoang.
