EMSL Analytical recommends radon testing to help prevent the world’s second leading cause of lung cancer.

Cinnaminson, NJ

This week the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced that a new effort by nine federal agencies to combat radon risks is currently underway. According to a release by the EPA, “The federal commitment made by EPA, the General Services Administration, and the departments of Agriculture, Defense, Energy, Health and Human Services, Housing and Urban Development, Interior, and Veterans Affairs will focus efforts on radon reduction and mitigation in homes, especially those of low-income families, many of whom do not have the resources to make the simple fixes necessary to protect their homes and loved ones.”

Radon is a radioactive gas that comes from the natural decay of uranium. It also happens to be a colorless, odorless and chemically inert gas that cannot be detected by human senses.

Only smoking causes more lung cancer deaths than radon according to industry and public health experts. Natural radon levels across the United States and other countries can vary considerably. Long-term exposure to radon can cause cancer according to the EPA, World Health Organization (WHO), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, American Lung Association and the National Academy of Sciences.

One of the largest radon testing laboratories in North America is EMSL Analytical, Inc. They have been providing environmental testing services since 1981 and currently operate over 30 laboratories across the United States and Canada. “This is an ideal time of the year to have a property tested for radon levels,” reported Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President at EMSL. “The cool weather in most parts of the country means most properties are sealed up making for perfect radon testing opportunities. Simple and affordable test kits are available to help property owners learn if they have elevated radon levels in their home.”
