ACP Hospitalist Dr. Johnson, IMI Physician Director at St. Joseph Medical Center

ST. LOUIS (Dec, 2010) – Inpatient Management, Inc., (IMI) announced that Allen L. Johnson, M.D., IMI Physician Director at PeaceHealth St. Joseph Medical Center in Bellingham, Wa., was named by ACP Hospitalist as a 2010 Top Hospitalist in the nation. The publication recognized Dr. Johnson among 10 hospitalist physicians in the November 2010 issue, citing his efforts to reduce patient length-of-stay and improve patient transitions from the hospital to primary care.

As IMI’s Physician Director at PeaceHealth St. Joseph, Dr. Johnson directs the hospitalist medicine program for the Medical Center, and in that capacity he launched a multidisciplinary initiative to shorten patient length-of-stay (LOS) and a standardized discharge summary to improve the transition from hospital to primary care.

Dr. Johnson’s LOS effort focused on outlier patients whose stays of 20 – 30 days were driving up LOS averages. “As a group we created balanced and consistent protocols for patient issues that could worsen conditions and prolong stays,” he noted. To date, the effort appears to have affected a reduction in St. Joseph’s average LOS from 4.5 days to just under 4 days. “IMI puts a strong emphasis on improving performance and meeting our hospital’s goals, so our hospitalist group is focused on better patient care and better results for St. Joseph,” said Dr. Johnson.

In addition, Dr. Johnson introduced a standardized discharge summary template that includes a checklist of 20 patient care issues that was compiled as part of a PeaceHealth leadership training program. PeaceHealth System is the parent organization for St. Joseph Medical Center.

“We are very proud that Dr. Johnson has been honored by ACP Hospitalist and recognized for his important contributions to St. Joseph Medical Center,” said Kirk Mathews, Chief Executive Officer of IMI. “He is a leader who understands the value of collaboration, and as such, he embodies key IMI values for our hospital medicine programs,” he added.

Dr. Johnson holds an MBA degree and is board certified in internal medicine and hyperbaric medicine. He practiced emergency medicine for 10 years, then joined Polyclinic in Seattle, Wa., serving as a hospitalist for three years before coming to IMI.
