Starbucks Opens 300th Store in Mexico

Company Celebrates Eight Years in Mexico and Reinforces Commitment to Latin America

SEATTLE and MEXICO CITY; – Starbucks Coffee Company (Nasdaq: SBUX) together with joint-venture partner Alsea today celebrates the opening of its 300th store in Mexico, it’s largest market in Latin America. Howard Schultz, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Starbucks along with John Culver, president, Starbucks Coffee International, joins Starbucks partners in Mexico City for this milestone occasion.

“Over the past eight years in Mexico, Starbucks and Alsea have remained committed to delivering the Starbucks Experience for our customers,” said Schultz. “Our 300th store opening not only marks substantial growth in this market, but it also represents our continued enthusiasm for providing positive impact in our local stores and coffee growing communities in Mexico.”

Starbucks remains committed to the communities where it operates, from the neighborhoods where stores are located to the farms where Starbucks coffee is grown. In 2010, Starbucks Coffee Mexico supported various community programs, including:

* Comon Yaj Nop Tic – Local school community building serving more than 240 students received support from more than 1.3 million pesos collected at Starbucks stores.
* TecMilenio – Program supporting students in financial need, for which Starbucks subsidized a portion of tuition.

For more than a decade, Starbucks and Conservation International have been working together with farmers to protect biodiversity “hotspots” such as El Triunfo Biosphere Reserve in Chiapas. Coffee farmers here are helping to protect the forest’s birds and biodiversity through the use of organic and traditional shade-growing agricultural methods. Further this year, more than 1,300 partners (employees) and volunteers planted more than 30,900 trees in cities throughout Mexico.

Starbucks and Alesa operate Starbucks stores in 43 cities in Mexico and employ more than 3,200 partners. In 2010, Starbucks was ranked as a top ten company on the “Great Place to Work” list in Mexico by the Great Place to Work Institute.
