Siemens hands over Severn Power combined cycle power plant in the UK to DONG Energy ahead of schedule

Erlangen, Germany, Siemens Energy handed over the Severn Power combined cycle power plant located in Uskmouth in the vicinity of Newport, Wales, one week ahead of schedule to the customer DONG Energy. Thanks to Siemens advanced burner technology the plant’s nitrogen oxide emission levels are very low at approximately 15 ppm (parts per million). The 834-megawatt (MW) plant achieves full output after only 30 to 35 minutes. The plant’s high operating flexibility means that it is capable of very quickly compensating for the fluctuating feed-in from wind turbines. With its efficiency of approximately 58 percent and low nitrogen oxide emissions Severn Power will supply more than 1.5 million households with ecofriendly electricity.

“With this power plant we have again succeeded in supplying a master-class combined cycle station,” said Lothar Balling, Head of GT Power Plant Solutions in the Fossil Power Generation Division of Siemens Energy. “This plant impressively demonstrates how assured supply, cost-effectiveness and environmental compatibility can be harmonized. It also exceeds the guaranteed performance demanded by the customer on all counts.” Utilizing an air-cooled condenser instead of a cooling tower and applying an innovative waste water concept has a positive impact on the plant’s environmental balance because these measures result in very low water consumption.

Severn Power also fulfills the stringent requirements of the UK grid code. For example, the plant is capable of responding very quickly to changes in grid frequency by adjusting the power output in order to stabilize grid frequency.

In terms of health & safety, too, the project is exemplary. More than three million working hours were clocked up without a Lost Time Accident. “This is a top result and at the same time a benchmark for the entire construction sector for power generating facilities,” said Balling. At peak times there were over 1200 workers on the Severn Power construction site.

Siemens built the Severn Power plant as a turnkey project on the site of a decommissioned coal-fired unit. The plant comprises two single-shaft units, with the main components being arranged in a single line of shafting. Siemens supplied two SGT5-4000F gas turbines, two SST5-5000 steam turbines, two hydrogen-cooled generators, the entire electrical equipment and an SPPA-T3000 I&C system. A 16-year service agreement was also signed. Siemens will not only maintain but also operate the plant.

Combined cycle power plants are part of Siemens’ Environmental Portfolio. In fiscal 2010, revenue from the Portfolio totaled about EUR28 billion, making Siemens the world’s largest supplier of ecofriendly technologies. In the same period, our products and solutions enabled customers to reduce their carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by 270 million tons, an amount equal to the total annual CO2 emissions of the megacities Hong Kong, London, New York, Tokyo, Delhi and Singapore.

The Siemens Energy Sector is the world’s leading supplier of a complete spectrum of products, services and solutions for the generation, transmission and distribution of power and for the extraction, conversion and transport of oil and gas. In fiscal 2010 (ended September 30), the Energy Sector had revenues of approximately EUR25.5 billion and received new orders totaling more than EUR30.1 billion and posted a profit of more than EUR3.6 billion. On September 30, 2010, the Energy Sector had a work force of more than 88,000. Further information is available at: www.siemens.com/energy
