On January 1st cities across California will begin enforcing the new California Green Building Standards Code (CALGreen Code). The new building codes were finalized earlier this year by California’s Building Standards Commission (CBSC) and Department of Housing and Community Development.

According to the CALGreen Code, “The purpose of this code is to improve public health, safety and general welfare by enhancing the design and construction of buildings through the use of building concepts having a reduced negative impact or positive environmental impact and encouraging sustainable construction practices in the following categories: 1. Planning and design, 2. Energy efficiency, 3. Water efficiency and conservation, 4. Material conservation and resource efficiency, and 5. Environmental quality.”

The new codes will help California cities with energy efficiency, indoor air quality (IAQ), water conservation, development and waste disposal and recycling efforts. The CALGreen Code should help improve the indoor environmental quality (IEQ) by promoting green products that would reduce exposure to such indoor contaminants as volatile organic compounds (VOCs), formaldehyde and other indoor pollutants.

Some California cities, such as Burlingame and San Mateo, have decided to implement their option to enforce additional green building measures in their cities. Each of these cities will require a minimum 15% additional energy efficiency requirement on top of the CALGreen Code.

LA Testing, an affiliate of EMSL Analytical and a leading source of green building and environmental testing services, provides comprehensive testing solutions and field equipment. “California’s decision to enforce additional green measures in their building codes means new challenges for builders, designers and remodelers,” reported Ben Sublasky, National Director of Client Services for LA Testing and EMSL Analytical. “At LA Testing the expert staff of scientists and customer service professionals can help by providing testing services to ensure green environments as well as supply testing equipment for field measurements.”
