One Christian Perspective on Black Friday Shopping: Opt Instead for Homemade Inexpensive Christmas Gifts
Good Christian Quotes (http://www.GoodChristianQuotes.com/Blog) today offered some advice for Christians thinking about joining the annual “Black Friday” shopping stampede: Consider trading a mall workout for the alternative of homemade Christmas gifts, crafted with love.
According to Good Christian Quotes spokesperson Faith Bernardone, “In addition to creating a more peaceful Thanksgiving weekend, the crafting of homemade gifts can remind Christians of their belief that Jesus was born into some of the poorest circumstances imaginable and later cautioned against materialism.”
Bernardone says it may take courage to offer loved ones what -- on the surface -- could appear a less valuable gift, but she adds, “Doing so may be a helpful reminder that ”bucking the trend" is part of the Christian life. That sometimes means ’putting out into the deep’ despite the natural fear of being rejected.”
The late Pope John Paul II numbered among Christian leaders concerned about the type of materialism that manifests itself at Christmas, Bernardone says. In his March 1, 1998 homily as pontiff he wrote, "Christ alone can free man from … the frenzy of consumerism and hedonism which ultimately destroys the human being.”
Bernadone says homemade Christmas gifts can be one step on a Christian family’s road to that freedom, and they also offer another benefit. "You don’t see many homemade gifts at garage sales.”
