LA Testing provides asbestos testing services to keep the public safe from exposure to deadly airborne asbestos fibers.

Garden Grove, CA

Earlier this month it was reported that someone illegally dumped fifteen tons of old roofing material in the Bayview district of San Francisco. The asbestos containing materials were left on the street for the city to remove at the cost of thousands of dollars to taxpayers. It took city workers six truckloads to remove the dangerous materials. The Public Works Department and the Police Department are offering a cash reward for information leading to an arrest in the case.

When asbestos containing materials, such as the illegally dumped roofing materials, become disturbed by wind or other means it allows for the asbestos fibers to become airborne putting area residents at risk.

The risks of developing lung cancer from asbestos exposure increases with the amount & type of fibers inhaled. Smokers also have an increased risk of lung cancer from inhaling asbestos fibers as compared to nonsmokers. Diseases caused by asbestos may not appear until 20 to 30 years after the asbestos exposure occurred.

Asbestos from building materials is heavily regulated. According to the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA), “When asbestos-containing materials are damaged or disturbed by repair, remodeling or demolition activities, microscopic fibers become airborne and can be inhaled into the lungs, where they can cause significant health problems.”

LA Testing, an affiliate of EMSL Analytical and a leading source of environmental testing services, provides comprehensive asbestos testing solutions. “When people disregard the safety regulations that are currently in place to protect people from asbestos exposure it puts everyone at risk,” reported Ben Sublasky, National Director of Client Services for LA Testing and EMSL Analytical. “Materials need to be tested to ensure they do not contain asbestos and if they do they then need to be handled according to established procedures.”
