Bausch + Lomb’s Joseph Barr, O.D., M.S., F.A.A.O., Receives Schapero Memorial Award at the 2010 American Academy of Optometry Meeting

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - Bausch + Lomb is proud to announce that Joseph Barr, O.D., M.S., F.A.A.O., vice president, Global Clinical & Medical Affairs and Professional Services, Vision Care, has received the American Academy of Optometry’s 2010 Max Schapero Memorial Award. The award is presented annually to a clinician, researcher or scholar who has made a significant contribution to the cornea and contact lens field by virtue of his/her publications, lectures or research efforts. Dr. Barr will be presented with the award on Friday, November 19, at the 88th annual meeting of the American Academy of Optometry in San Francisco, Calif.

This year, Dr. Barr was also the recipient of the Heart of America Contact Lens Society O.D. of the Year award, which is presented to leaders in the eye care profession for their numerous accomplishments, particularly in research and clinical studies. Dr. Barr received the award in recognition of his years of valuable research and service to the industry.

Dr. Barr served on the Executive Committee and was director of the Collaborative Longitudinal Evaluation of Keratoconus Photography Reading Center. He is also a member of the inaugural global advisory council to the Pediatric Cataract Initiative, a program co-sponsored by the Bausch + Lomb Early Vision Institute and Lions Clubs International Foundation. The program aims to identify, fund and promote innovative methods of overcoming pediatric cataracts for the long-term benefit of children, their families and their communities.

Dr. Barr joined Bausch + Lomb in 2007. In 2008 he was named vice president, Global Clinical & Medical Affairs and Professional Services, Vision Care. In this role for Bausch + Lomb, Dr. Barr leads a team of clinical researchers, medical affairs professionals and professional services specialists who provide high-end products and services to eye care professionals. Prior to joining Bausch + Lomb, Dr. Barr served as Associate Dean for Professional Program and Clinical Services and EF Wildermuth Professor of Optometry at The Ohio State University College of Optometry.

Dr. Barr received his doctor of optometry degree from The Ohio State University College of Optometry and completed a combined Advanced Practice Fellowship in cornea and contact lenses and a Master of Science in Physiological Optics. Dr. Barr is chairman of the American Academy of Optometry Cornea and Contact Lens Section, and from 1987 to 2007, he served as editor of Contact Lens Spectrum and the Contact Lens Today weekly newsletter. He is also a member of the International Society for Contact Lens Research, the International Association of Contact Lens Educators and the American Optometric Association.
