DirectRooms – Phnom Penh witnesses major celebrations for Human Rights Day

Cambodia will come alive with celebrations as part of the national holiday for Human Rights Day in December DirectRooms can report.

On 10th December 2010 the capital of Phnom Penh and cities around the country will be hosting parties to celebrate the holiday. Visitors can see displays of banners and decorations along the streets and colourful parades of people performing local music and dance.

Puppeteers, dancers and musicians will perform at theaters in the capital putting on human rights themed productions including songs from local artists that have composed lyrics about topics such as land equality, social mistreatment and living environments.

Recent years have seen a significant growth in property development and as a result thousands of Cambodians have been evicted from their homes to make way for developers. Research from Amnesty International indicated that in 2008 close to 150,000 people believed that they were in danger of eviction and the actual number of evictees was in the high thousands.
