EPA Awards Millions to Help Improve the Nation’s Indoor Air Quality

EMSL Analytical offers indoor air quality (IAQ) testing services and products to help ensure building occupants across the country have safe air to breathe.

Cinnaminson, NJ

Last month the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced they are awarding 17 cooperative agreements to nonprofit organizations and a university, totaling approximately $2.4 million to improve indoor air quality nationwide. According to Gina McCarthy, assistant administrator for EPA’s Office of Air and Radiation, “EPA is proud to be working with our partners nationwide to improve the air we breathe at school, work and home. American communities face serious health and environmental challenges from air pollution. This effort gives us an opportunity to improve indoor air quality by increasing awareness of environmental health risks.”

The goal of the EPA projects is to educate the American public about ways to reduce environmental health risks of indoor contaminants. According to the EPA announcement the cooperative agreements will:

• Promote positive indoor air quality management practices in schools nationwide, including holistic approaches to environmental issues.
• Create awareness to reduce asthma triggers in the home and encourage the use of an asthma management plan.
• Increase the number of homes tested for radon and built with radon-resistant features, and increase mitigation of radon in existing homes.
• Increase effective indoor air quality practices in office buildings.
• Motivate Americans to improve their home’s indoor air quality.

EMSL Analytical, one of the nation’s largest indoor air quality testing laboratories, has nearly three decades of providing testing services to identify and eliminate IAQ health hazards. “The 17 cooperative agreements to further our understanding of IAQ issues is a big step in the right direction,” reported Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President at EMSL. “The health hazards from poor IAQ are diverse, ranging from mold and bacteria to radon and chemical contaminants. At EMSL we are also dedicated to helping American’s breathe healthy air in their homes, schools and places of business.”
