Solutions to the Economic Impact of Poor Indoor Air Quality

WEBWIRE

UltraViolet Devices, Inc. (UVDI) provides technology solutions for improving indoor air quality (IAQ) and preventing lost productivity and dangerous health conditions.

Our understanding of how indoor air quality issues relate to human health and worker productivity has increased dramatically over the last several decades. However, quantifying the economic impact of poor IAQ has not been an easy task to accomplish.

William Fisk, Senior Staff Scientist and Department Head from the Indoor Environmental Department at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, working with colleagues released findings related to IAQ, thermal and lighting conditions. The findings, published in the ASHRAE Journal, included some startling figures related to the annual economic costs of common respiratory illnesses, including:
• 180 million lost workdays
• 120 million additional days of restricted activity
• $36 billion in healthcare costs
• $70 billion total cost

According to the research, improving indoor air quality and lighting, would enhance worker performance and result in $20 to $160 billion in additional annual savings based on productivity gains. The report further states that reducing sick building syndrome symptoms could lead to a potential annual savings of $300 per office worker.

Fortunately there are proven solutions to improve IAQ available from UltraViolet Devices, a leading provider of advanced ultraviolet (UV) disinfection products and molecular filtration solutions.

“UVDI’s ultraviolet (UV) disinfection products are designed for installation in HVAC systems and are proven to eliminate mold, bacteria and viruses that would otherwise create a health hazard for workers,” reported Paul Cochrane, Public Relations Manager for UVDI. Additionally, UVDI’s Sparks Technology™ bonded activated carbon filters remove volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and other hazardous air pollutants to help protect workers from gaseous contaminants and harmful odors.”
