Problematic Chinese Drywall Settlement Reached

WEBWIRE

EMSL Analytical provides six testing solutions to determine if properties have defective Chinese drywall and if it is causing indoor air quality (IAQ) problems.

Cinnaminson, NJ

Last week it was reported in the Insurance Journal that up to 300 Homes in Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana and Florida that were constructed with faulty drywall from China will be remediated. According to the article, “Hundreds of lawsuits have been filed against homebuilders, developers, installers, realtors, brokers, suppliers, importers, exporters, distributors and manufacturers over drywall from China, which was widely imported into the United States between 2004 and 2006.”

In April of this year the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), along with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), released a statement that recommended removing problem drywall from homes. The document states, “Based on scientific study of the problem to date, HUD and CPSC recommend consumers remove all possible problem drywall from their homes, and replace electrical components and wiring, gas service piping, fire suppression sprinkler systems, smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms. Taking these steps should help eliminate both the source of the problem drywall and corrosion-damaged components that might cause a safety problem in the home.”

EMSL Analytical, one of the nation’s premier environmental and materials testing laboratories has been busy helping builders, environmental consultants and the general public test samples of suspicious Chinese drywall. EMSL Analytical has developed a series of tests specifically for Chinese drywall samples which begin at only $61.

“Problems with defective Chinese drywall not only cause damage to items in the properties affected, but also poses potential health risks to building occupants,” reported Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President at EMSL Analytical. “EMSL’s Material Testing Division has been a leader from day one of this problem and they have the expertise and advanced scientific instrumentation to successfully test any suspect drywall.”
