Asbestos & Heavy Metals Contamination in Socorro, New Mexico
LA Testing provides hazardous waste, heavy metals and asbestos testing services to protect communities near superfund sites.
Garden Grove, CA
In August the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Region 6 released an updated report about Eagle Picher Carefree Battery Superfund Site in Socorro, New Mexico. The site, located just a few miles from the town of Socorro and over 9,000 residents, is contaminated with heavy metals in the soils and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the groundwater.
The location was used in the past to manufacture circuit boards, lead acid batteries and other products. According to the EPA the primary pollutants at the site include:
Trichloroethene (TCE) (groundwater)
1,1-Dichloroethene (1,1-DCE) (groundwater)
It has also been reported that the remaining structures at the facility may contain lead and asbestos. In 2007 the site was added to the National Priorities List and in 2009 the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) released a Public Health Assessment of the location.
LA Testing, an affiliate of EMSL Analytical and a leading source of environmental testing services, provides comprehensive analyses for superfund sites such as the one at Socorro. Not only was the Socorro site a former manufacturing facility that used solvents and heavy metals, but the location was also used by the city as a municipal landfill, reported Ben Sublasky, National Director of Client Services for LA Testing and EMSL Analytical. The mix of pollutants can not only contaminate groundwater, but also contaminated soils that can become airborne and cause health problems for people in nearby areas. The comprehensive testing solutions provided by LA Testing can help identify contaminants and lead to remediation solutions to protect people and the environment in situations like these.
