Paris, - Astrium, Europe’s leading space company, has launched a special “World Space Week” micro website, http://event.astrium.eads.net/en-wsw where young people worldwide can learn about the exciting space missions Astrium is involved with; take part in a fun-packed space quiz; engage with a variety of space multimedia, including images, videos and cartoons; and even leave a message or upload a drawing on Astrium’s interactive online pin board!

World Space Week is an annual celebration launched by the UN General Assembly in 1999 on the anniversary of the launch of Sputnik in 1957 and the signing of the Treaty on the Peaceful Use of Space in 1967.

This year, engineers and scientists from Astrium, are also visiting thousands of schools across France, Germany, Spain and the U.K. to inspire young people about the wonders of space.

As well as visiting schools, a number of special events have also been organised across the UK with Astrium sites in Portsmouth and Stevenage teaming up with local science centres, businesses, universities and colleges to run a wide range of workshops, hands-on exhibitions and talks about space.

In Germany, Astrium is participating in a special space themed day in the Baden-Württemberg region, working closely with the ministry of economics of Baden-Württemberg, universities, the German Space Industry (DLR) and local industry, where hundreds of young people will gather in Stuttgart for a series of educational workshops and space talks.

Furthermore, in Spain, Astrium employees inaugurated the World Space Week on Saturday with the launch of micro launchers at Madrid’s Planetarium Amphitheatre. They will also be visiting a number of schools in Madrid in order to bring space closer to the students with presentations, videos and giveaways.

In France, the departments of Aquitaine, Midi-Pyrénées, Yvelines and Essonne will be celebrating World Space Week. Astrium employees will be visiting hundreds of classrooms.
