Ultraviolet Germicidal Technology Helps Prevent the Spread of Deadly Infections caused by C. diff
Health concerns associated with Clostridium difficile (C. diff) have received increased attention from government agencies, healthcare providers and the general public. C. diff is a bacterium that causes Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea (CDAD): a serious intestinal infection. According to an article in the May 2009 issue of American Journal of Infection Control, a survey of 648 medical facilities revealed a C. diff. infection rate of thirteen out of every one thousand inpatients. These stunning rates were approximately 20 times higher than previous estimates.
UltraViolet Devices, Inc. (UVDI), a leading provider of advanced ultraviolet (UV) disinfection products, has introduced new technology designed to eliminate threats from C. diff and other surface borne pathogens. UVDI’s Mobile Room Sanitizer is a mobile device with high intensity UV–C band lamps designed to quickly disinfect high touch surfaces in hospital rooms and healthcare practitioner work areas. Recently, the device was subjected to third party testing at a leading EPA recognized test facility to verify efficacy.
Dr. Ashish Mathur, Director of Technology for UltraViolet Devices commented that, “Hospitals and healthcare facilities can combat the spread of C. diff utilizing ultraviolet technology. Test results for the Mobile Room Sanitizer showed that with as little as 5 minutes of exposure to 254 nm UV-C band energy, 97% of C. diff spores were destroyed at an eight foot distance. With 10 minutes exposure, the disinfection rate increased to 99.9%. Our testing clearly shows that properly applied ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI) effectively destroys C. diff spores and thus provides the infection control professional a powerful new weapon to combat the spread of CDAD.”
