Environmental testing can provide solutions to keep priceless outdoor artwork and artifacts secure for generations to come.

Artwork such as sculptures, statues and painted historic monuments that are on display outdoors are often exposed to not only challenges due to weather, but also deterioration from pollution. Airborne contaminants, such as volatile organic compounds (VOCs) or other chemicals, from automobiles and industry can create acid rain and corrosion.

The key to be able to prevent the deterioration, or even destruction, of outdoor artwork or ancient ruins is to understand what is causing the situation. Recently EMSL was asked to perform testing to determine why centuries old Native American paintings that were located in a cave were rapidly deteriorating. Due to their location in a cave they were not subject to weathering from rain and their location in a desert region meant humidity levels were low.

To solve the mystery samples of dust form the cave were taken and analyzed. Surprisingly, magnesium chloride was found in the dust samples. Upon further investigation of the situation it was revealed that a petroleum company had a trucking route near the site. They would routinely spray a solution of magnesium chloride on the rural road to keep the dust down. Over time, enough dust laced with magnesium chloride was able to reach the site and adversely impact the historical paintings.

EMSL Analytical’s testing laboratory has access to state-of-the-art instrumentation and scientific expertise to handle cases like these. “Whether it’s extensive GC/MS or LC/MS characterization for organic contaminates, SEM/EDX elemental analysis for salts or evidence of acid degradation, EMSL has the ability to identify the problem,” reported Joe Frasca, Executive Vice President at EMSL Analytical. “This is just one example of these types of challenging cases that we are able to help resolve and find solutions for clients.”
