Garden Grove, CA

Earlier this month The Seattle Times reported about asbestos concerns along the Sumas River in Washington. It all began with flooding that occurred back in January of 2009 that spread debris carried down the river onto adjacent property and even into flooded homes. According to the report, “…caky flood deposits left behind in yards along the river all the way to Canada showed levels of asbestos as high as 27 percent.”

The asbestos in question is naturally occurring asbestos that was picked up by flood waters upstream and deposited down river. The asbestos fibers in the soil do not cause harm unless they are breathed which can happen as the materials dry and experience strong winds, are disturbed by remediation efforts or are aerosolized during outdoor activities.

The risks of developing lung cancer from asbestos exposure increases with the amount & type of fibers inhaled. Smokers also have an increased risk of lung cancer from inhaling asbestos fibers as compared to nonsmokers. The diseases may not appear until 20 to 30 years after the asbestos exposure occurred.

Asbestos from building materials in indoor environments is heavily regulated. Naturally occurring asbestos, found outdoors, is much harder for officials to characterize the health risks to area residents. Many local people are worried and one family even left town. Last month researcher with protective gear wear seen taking air samples to try and measure exposure risks.

LA Testing, an affiliate of EMSL Analytical and a leading source of environmental testing services, provides asbestos testing solutions. “Until the researchers can determine the amount of airborne asbestos fibers area residents are on edge,” reported Ben Sublasky, National Director of Client Services for LA Testing and EMSL Analytical. “Fortunately companies such as LA Testing can provide rapid and affordable testing solutions for families that want to conduct their own tests.”
