LA Testing provides chemical and hazardous waste testing services to keep soldiers and industrial workers safe from toxic materials.

Garden Grove, CA

Earlier this month it was reported that a widow of a retired Marine was awarded compensation for her husband’s death. The retired soldier had worked at the Marine Corps Air Station in El Toro, California from 1968 through 1971. His death from progressive small lymphocytic lymphoma and chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) was ruled by the VA Board of Veterans’ Appeal as due to exposure he faced while stationed at the base.

According to Veterans Affairs, “it was more likely than not that the Veteran’s leukemia and lymphoma were caused from this in-service chemical exposure at El Toro MCAS during his transport of hazardous materials and his exposure to pollution from landfill burnings.”

Four landfills on the base burned waste, fuels, industrial solvents and other toxic materials. In 1990, El Toro was listed on the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) National Priorities list of hazardous waste locations that required cleanup. Veterans Affairs concluded the soldier had been exposed to benzene, aromatic amines and other toxic materials at El Toro.

Trichloroethylene (TCE) and perchloroethylene (PCE) are several of the contaminants that have been found in the base’s soil and groundwater and other former soldiers that worked at El Toro report additional serious health problems. LA Testing, an affiliate of EMSL Analytical and a leading provider of chemical testing services, offers analytical services to protect people from dangerous carcinogens and hazardous waste.

“There are countless old hazardous waste sites across the country that have caused damage to people that worked at them or lived near them,” reported Ben Sublasky, National Director of Client Services for LA Testing and EMSL Analytical. “Many of these same hazardous waste sites continue to pollute the environment and pose health hazards to area residents. At LA Testing our laboratories provide complete hazardous waste testing services for water, air and soil contamination.”
