PacketCableTM Multimedia-Based Solution Enables MSOs to Dynamically Monitor and Mitigate Security Threats in Advanced Multiservice Networks.

SUNNYVALE, Calif., April 10th, 2005 - Juniper Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ: JNPR) today announced a new solution that enables cable multiple systems operators (MSOs) to protect Voice over IP (VoIP) and SIP-based services against network security attacks. The new solution increases the security of existing services, reduces costs of network downtime, and enables new, value-added managed security services.

Working with any PacketCableTM Multimedia-compliant cable modem termination system (CMTS), the Cable Dynamic Threat Mitigation solution integrates Juniper’s routing platforms, Intrusion Detection and Prevention (IDP) devices and SDX Service Deployment System, enabling MSOs to quickly and effectively identify and isolate security threats so that infected customers and operations staff can be notified. By leveraging a PacketCable Multimedia-based architecture, Juniper’s new Cable Dynamic Threat Mitigation solution enables MSOs to secure VoIP services end-to-end across their network, from the IP core through to the end user.

The Cable Dynamic Threat Mitigation solution utilizes a Juniper Networks IDP device, which monitors for network attacks on a per-user, per-application, or on-demand basis, and the Juniper Networks SDX-300. Offending traffic, such as malware or a distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack, is detected by the IDP, which notifies the SDX-300. The SDX then sends the appropriate policy to any Juniper Networks routing platform and/or third-party PacketCable Multimedia-qualified CMTS or metro routing platform, enabling MSOs to implement a range of options to mitigate the threat. According to the nature of the threat, MSOs can choose to rate limit or filter traffic, drop the call, or redirect the user to a web-portal, and automatically re-establish service once the threat is eliminated.

In addition to securing VoIP services, the new solution can also be extended to provide security for SIP-based services, such as online gaming, video conferencing, instant messaging, and push-to-talk services. SIP is often the focus of Denial of Service, spoofing and many other attacks.

“Cable operators have been quite successful at expanding into voice services, but like any IP-based service, VoIP can be vulnerable to security threats,” said Andrew J. Audet vice president, Cable Products Business, Juniper Networks. “With this solution, Juniper provides a whole-network approach to monitoring and securing advanced IP-based services against a range of threats. This is another example of Juniper’s commitment to the cable market, and of our ability to deliver the features and functionality MSOs require to secure and assure their infrastructure.”
