Ultraviolet Germicidal Technology from UVDI helps prevent the spread of infectious diseases by destroying bacteria, fungi and viruses.

Whooping cough, also known as pertussis, is a highly contagious bacterial disease that causes violent coughing. This month, California health officials reported an epidemic of whopping cough that has already claimed the lives of 9 children and caused over 4,000 cases. Nationwide there have been 11,466 reported cases according to the Centers for Disease Prevention and Control (CDC).

Other deadly bacteria were reported in a recent article in USA Today entitled “Drug-resistant ‘superbugs’ hit 20 states, spread worldwide”. The article stated, “Bacteria that are able to survive every modern antibiotic are cropping up in many U.S. hospitals and are spreading outside the USA, public health officials say. The bugs, reported by hospitals in more than 20 states, typically strike the critically ill and are fatal in 30% to 60% of cases.”

The ‘superbugs’ have a gene that produces an enzyme called Klebsiella pneumonia carbapenamase (KPC). The enzyme allows the bacteria to disable carbapenam antibiotics, which are often considered a last resort treatment for infections that do not respond to traditional antibiotics.

UltraViolet Devices, Inc. (UVDI), a leading provider of advanced ultraviolet (UV) disinfection products for air and surfaces, has designed products to specifically eliminate threats from pathogens found in hospitals, schools and other indoor environments.

“Properly applied ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI) can reduce threats from infectious diseases such as whooping cough and the ‘superbugs’ that are spreading across U.S. hospitals,” reported Paul Cochrane, Public Relations Manager for UVDI. “Not only does UVGI technology reduce the number of deaths and illnesses caused by these pathogens, but it also saves billions of dollars in medical costs and lost productivity.”
