LA Testing provides hexavalent chromium and other metal testing services to keep soldiers and industrial workers safe from the cancer causing materials.

Garden Grove, CA

Last month a federal judge ruled a lawsuit by some veterans of the Oregon Army National Guard could proceed against a major contractor from the war in Iraq. The veterans claim the private company exposed them to piles of a toxic powder that contained hexavalent chromium.

Hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) is known to be a human carcinogen via inhalation exposure. The compounds are a group of chemical substances that contain the metallic element chromium in its positive-6 valence (hexavalent) state.

Occupational exposures to Cr(VI) occur during the production of stainless steel, chromate chemicals, and chromate pigments. Cr(VI) exposures also occur during other work activities such as stainless steel welding, thermal cutting, chrome plating, painting, and coating processes. Stripping and painting of aluminum surfaces, such as aircraft fuselages and aluminum castings are of particular concern due to widespread use of zinc chromate primers that enable better paint adhesion.

According to NIOSH, “An increased risk of lung cancer has been demonstrated in workers exposed to Cr(VI) compounds. Other adverse health effects associated with Cr(VI) exposure include dermal irritation, skin ulceration, allergic contact dermatitis, occupational asthma, nasal irritation and ulceration, perforated nasal septa, rhinitis, nosebleed, respiratory irritation, nasal cancer, sinus cancer, eye irritation and damage, perforated eardrums, kidney damage, liver damage, pulmonary congestion and edema, epigastric pain, and erosion and discoloration of the teeth.”

LA Testing, an affiliate of EMSL Analytical and a leading provider of hexavalent chromium testing services, offers analytical services to protect people from the dangerous carcinogen. “The lawsuit in Oregon shows that even during times of war soldiers need protection from hazardous substances,” reported Ben Sublasky, National Director of Client Services for LA Testing and EMSL Analytical. “LA Testing can provide quick and accurate results to ensure environments are safe for soldiers and workers.”
