Transmode supplies flexible optical ROADM network for the Catalan regional government

WEBWIRE

Stockholm, Sweden - Transmode, a leading supplier of optical networking solutions, today announced a new network deployment for the Generalitat of Catalonia, the Catalan regional government, based in North-Eastern Spain.

The Generalitat’s Centre for Telecommunications and Information Technologies (CTTI) has deployed Transmode’s TM-Series, with Reconfigurable Optical Add Drop Multiplexer (ROADM) technology to enable it to easily add flexibility and capacity to its existing network. Five nodes have been deployed in Barcelona and other major Cities and the extra capacity enables Generalitat to offer wholesale services to service providers and telecoms operators.

“We are delighted with the new network from Transmode. Besides its superior technical performance, the Transmode solution has provided us with the best price/performance network design,” said Jordi Bosch, Secretary of Telecommunications and the Information Society for the regional government. “Transmode was the only vendor to offer a ROADM-based solution that met our technical requirements within our available budget. Since the network went live we have had no problems with the installation and no returns or failures. In fact, the new intelligence built into the Transmode network has helped us to locate external issues quicker and to provide our customers with enhanced services.”

The new network provides the Generalitat with initially 40 channels and the potential to easily expand this to 80 channels in the future. A major differentiator of Transmode’s WDM solution from the competition is its Network Management tools. These enable the Generalitat to create customer portals for each of their services giving their customers the ability to view SLA compliance data. The network runs Ethernet over WDM using Double 10G Ethernet Transponders for 10G Ethernet transport and 9x GbE Muxponders for Gigabit Ethernet transport and aggregation to 10G.

Optical flexibility is becoming increasingly important as network capacity continues to grow due to demand for high-speed broadband capacity from residential and business users alike. The ability to remotely reconfigure optical channels within the network allows the Generalitat to reduce its service activation cost and duration, which increases service velocity with a corresponding impact on revenue and competitive edge for the operator.

“This installation in Catalonia is an excellent example of how the best metro and regional networks need to evolve in order to support the rapid bandwidth growth generated by mobile data, Triple Play services and business Ethernet services,” said Björn Andersson, Transmode’s VP Sales. “Transmode helped the Catalan Government to design a flexible network capable of absorbing any new traffic demand and pattern, bringing the high capacity network to areas that are less commercially viable today through the rural broadband stimulus program. This deployment of a dynamic network with all the necessary management tools is a significant step and shows how Transmode is addressing the rapidly growing ROADM segment within the metro optical market.”

About Generalitat of Catalonia
