Philips helps consumers reduce their environmental impact at IFA 2010

WEBWIRE

Berlin, Germany – Royal Philips Electonics (AEX: PHI, NYSE: PHG) is unveiling a range of advanced consumer products that help people enjoy a healthier and better life in a simple way, this year at the Internationale Funk Ausstellung (IFA), taking place in Berlin from September 2-8. From televisions to irons, and vacuum cleaners to home cinema sound systems, Philips is cutting energy consumption and increasing recyclability – both by using more recycled materials in new products, and ensuring that its products are easier to recycle or include biodegradable parts.

Introducing Europe’s greenest TV
Designed to make it easy for consumers to reduce their impact on the environment every day, Philips is introducing Econova LED TV, Europe’s greenest LED TV, with a solar remote control. Awarded European Green TV 2010-2011 by the European Imaging & Sound Association (EISA), Econova LED TV holistically addresses concerns about the environment without compromising on performance, delivering a truly captivating cinematic experience in the home with minimal impact on the environment.

Philips Econova LED TV uses the latest LED lighting technology reducing energy consumption by up to 60% – the lowest in its category – whilst delivering best-in-class picture quality. Its Zero power switch means that – unlike other TVs on the market – when you switch your TV off, power consumption is reduced to 0 watt. Econova LED TV is made from materials that are easy to recycle and have been used before. Even so, Econova LED TV exudes quality thanks to its solid high-quality aluminium housing.

Philips and Electrolux extend the global standard in dust bags with s-bag® GREEN
With a variety of over 1000 different models worldwide, finding the right vacuum cleaner dust bag has been a challenge for consumers for many decades. To make life easier, in 2001 Philips and Electrolux developed the standard s-bag®. The two companies have now collaborated to launch the 100% natural s-bag® GREEN, which is made entirely from renewable resources.

s-bag® GREEN is made of unbleached corn starch, natural rubber and recycled cardboard, which means that all of its raw materials are biodegradable. Only the non-edible parts of corn starch are used, so there is no impact on food supply or prices. The packaging of the s-bag® GREEN is made of 100% recycled material and decays in nature within 15 weeks. Up to 65% less petroleum is used in its production and it has a lifespan up to 50% longer than paper bags.

Reducing energy use throughout the home
Normal irons use up to 90% of their energy to convert water into steam. The powerful EnergyCare Steam Iron uses 20% less energy, without affecting performance. An innovative feature called Automatic Energy Saving has been added to the iron, limiting the wasted steam automatically, but ensuring you always have the right amount of steam for an optimal result.

Building on Philips’ 70-year heritage in shaving innovation, the SensoTouch 3D delivers Philips’ most advanced shave yet. It’s also better for the environment, with an innovative powerplug that reduces energy consumption by over 10%, and packaging that reduces environmental impact by more than 50%.

Philips 360Sound technology brings the original cinema sound experience to your home, filling your room with rich, absorbing sound from all angles. With DTS-HD and Dolby True HD producing high fidelity surround sound, it immerses you in such fine detail it will give you goosebumps. The HD Home Theatre with 360Sound combines this great sound experience with a high-quality finish and energy efficient technology that uses 24% less energy.

Philips delivers strong sustainability performance, sets ambitious goals for the future
In February 2010, Philips celebrated the significant progress it has made in its EcoVision4 program launched in 2007, which set targets for green sales, green innovation investments and increased operational energy efficiency by the end of 2012. Across its three sectors – Healthcare, Lighting and Consumer Lifestyle – the company reported that 31% of total 2009 sales stemmed from the sale of green products. Philips also revealed that it will reach its Green Innovation investment target of a cumulative EUR 1 billion in 2010.

At the same time, the company set out ambitious targets under EcoVision5, its sustainability targets for 2015:

* To bring care to more than 500 million people
* To improve the energy efficiency of its overall product portfolio by 50%
* To double the collection and recycling of its end-of-life products, as well as the amount of recycled materials used in Philips products
