NetApp Integrates with VMware® vCloud™ Director to Improve IT Flexibility and Efficiency

WEBWIRE

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - Today at VMworld 2010, NetApp (NASDAQ: NTAP) announced support for VMware vCloud™ Director software to extend NetApp’s current leadership in delivering shared storage infrastructure for virtualized environments. VMware vCloud Director enables the delivery of cloud-based IT services for both private and public clouds ranging from on-demand, pay-as-you go infrastructure to enterprise-class, production-ready service offerings. Now VMware® vCloud™ Director customers can immediately benefit from the storage efficiency, data protection, and rapid provisioning features already available for VMware virtualized infrastructures.

A secure shared infrastructure provides the foundation necessary to fully realize the business flexibility and operational efficiencies made possible by a cloud service model. Cloud infrastructures built using NetApp’s proven architecture and best practices enable organizations to rapidly make the transition from a virtualized IT environment to cloud computing based on VMware technology.

“VMware is pleased to work with NetApp to enable the evolution of existing virtual environments to a cloud services model that helps organizations meet business needs with greater agility and lower costs,” said Gary Green, vice president, Global Strategic Alliances, VMware. “By integrating VMware vCloud™ Director, NetApp is able to extend its shared storage infrastructure and help ease and accelerate our customers’ journey to IT as a service.”

NetApp’s integration with VMware vCloud Director will enable administrators to automate the creation and deployment of virtual resources for application users, such as internal business units. NetApp® storage systems minimize the capacity needed for each new virtual resource deployed in a shared environment by leveraging thin provisioning and deduplication technology. Integrated data protection technology can create space-efficient copies of data, which can be stored either locally or on remote systems to provide both backup and disaster recovery for a cloud environment.

“NetApp has proven to be a great partner for us in delivering innovative cloud-based services,” said Randy Rowland, Terremark’s senior vice president for Product Development. “NetApp’s unified storage platform helps us deploy our cloud services to quickly meet strong customer demand for our cloud computing products. As we continue to provide flexible, cost-effective cloud solutions for our enterprise customers, the combination of NetApp’s solutions and their Service Provider Program is critical to reducing costs and delivering world-class service.”

In addition, the NetApp Partner Program recently integrated service providers into the broader NetApp solution partner ecosystem. The first of its kind in the storage industry, this global program supports service providers as they deploy enterprise-class cloud services on NetApp’s efficient storage and data management solutions. It also offers service providers access to marketing and sales support, allowing them to differentiate their services, and help speed time to market.

“Customers benefit from improved operating and storage efficiencies by leveraging NetApp’s shared storage infrastructure with VMware® vCloud™ Director,” said Patrick Rogers, vice president of Solutions and Alliances at NetApp. “Working together, NetApp and VMware enable enterprise customers and service providers to easily and cost-effectively evolve to a cloud service model by building upon their existing virtualized infrastructure.”
