TestAmerica Expert Presents on the Impacts of PPCP Analysis in Saline Water at the 2010 Dioxin Symposium

WEBWIRE

TestAmerica’s Michael Flournoy, Technical Director of the West Sacramento laboratory, will present on the unique challenges associated with analyzing Pharmaceuticals and Personal Care Products (PPCPs) in water samples with varying levels of salinity at the 2010 Dioxin Symposium. The poster presentation will be provided during the week of September 12-17, 2010 in San Antonio, TX.

As a class of emerging contaminants, PPCPs pose a potential risk to human health and the environment, where compounds are commonly found in medicinal, cosmetic, and personal hygiene products. Water treatment techniques often do not eliminate the concentrations of PPCPs found in discharged water.

As fresh water sources become quickly depleted, emphasis is turning towards desalination using reverse osmosis or electro-dialysis reversal of saline water. In this, PPCP test methods originally developed for traditional matrices present unique analytical challenges when testing contaminants in varying saline-based waters.

TestAmerica performed a sample collection program study to determine the common PPCP compound concentrations and the probability of using advanced analytical methodologies for non-routine matrices. The poster presentation will focus on data results conducted throughout the Puget Sound region in Washington, which reveals the potential impact of varying levels of salinity in determining many PPCP contaminants.

Mr. Flournoy has over 20 years of environmental laboratory experience and is TestAmerica’s technical expert on PPCPs. He has actively contributed to the specialty method development of steroids, hormones, antibacterial products, over-the-counter (OTC) medication, and other Pharmaceuticals and Personal Care Products (Modified EPA Method 1694 and 1698).
