Several California Cities Rank Highest on the American Lung Association’s List of Most Ozone Polluted Cities

Bonded activated carbon filters from UltraViolet Devices (UVDI) provide solutions for ozone removal in California and cities nationwide.

The American Lung Association recently released their annual report, State of the Air 2010. The report reveals ozone and particulate pollution levels found at monitoring sites across the country. The California cities of Los Angeles, Long Beach and Riverside remained at the top of the American Lung Association list for cities most polluted by ozone.

Ozone, consisting of three oxygen atoms, is beneficial in the upper atmosphere because it helps protect the planet from harmful radiation. However, tropospheric ozone, also known as low level ozone, is recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as a pollutant that causes respiratory problems for humans and animals. In populated areas, ozone is generated by sunlight reacting with hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxides in the air. Both industry and vehicle exhaust are major contributors of these ozone generating gases.

High levels of ozone are known to cause respiratory problems and reduce lung functions. It is also a recognized trigger for asthma attacks. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) set ozone standards in May of 2008 at 75 ppb, while the WHO recommends 51 ppb.

Granular activated carbon filters remove ozone and other hazardous air pollutants to help protect people from ozone exposure. UVDI’s Sparks Technology™ brand of bonded activated carbon filters are ideally designed for effective ozone removal. Sparks Technology utilizes a proprietary bonded activated carbon manufacturing process known as BPS™ (Bonded Particulate Structure) technology that increases its effectiveness over other carbon products.

“Exposure to elevated levels of ozone can be very detrimental to people’s health,” reported Ashish Mathur, PhD, UVDI’s Director of Technology. “Sparks Technology’s BPS carbon products properly installed in building ventilation systems will reduce ozone contamination and improve quality of life for building occupants and ultimately reduce health problems.” Mathur continued.
