New Offering Extends Enterprise-Class Data Protection to Remote Offices

CUPERTINO, Calif. - April 3, 2006 - Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC) today announced the availability of Veritas NetBackup 6.0 PureDisk Remote Office Edition, enabling enterprises to dramatically improve the reliability, security, and manageability of remote office data backup and recovery. The latest addition to the market-leading NetBackup product family, NetBackup PureDisk software leverages advanced technologies in disk-to-disk backup, data reduction, encryption, replication, and centralized administration to directly address the most pressing challenges associated with remote office backup, including tape administration, lack of skilled IT personnel at remote offices, and the risks involved with transporting un-encrypted backup tapes offsite. In addition, existing NetBackup customers can benefit from the new NetBackup PureDisk solution by standardizing on a single backup and recovery platform for their data center and remote offices. NetBackup PureDisk is based on technology from Data Center Technologies (DCT), a private company that Symantec acquired in 2005.

“Today, there is as much or more data in remote offices as there is in the data center yet remote data is grossly underprotected -- largely because there have been no real efficient ways of protecting it,” says Heidi Biggar, analyst, Enterprise Strategy Group. “Traditional backup products were simply not designed to meet remote office needs. Symantec’s new remote backup software has the ease-of-use, management, and data movement features that these classes of users demand.”

“As the leading global technology services company, we are committed to ensuring the protection of our customers’ data wherever it resides -- whether it is at their corporate headquarters, in the data center or in a remote office. NetBackup PureDisk will allow us to secure our customers’ data, both in the data center and across the network, while simplifying the backup process,” said Larry Lozon, vice president, Data Center Services, EDS. “The new offering from Symantec will allow us to reduce both our secondary storage usage and bandwidth consumption for backups, helping us drive down storage costs for our clients while protecting business critical data.”

“For many enterprises, remote office data protection is like the Wild, Wild West -- uncontrolled, insecure, and chaotic,” said Kris Hagerman, senior vice president, data center management group, Symantec Corp. “Given the large amount of critical corporate data that resides in remote offices, there is an urgent demand from enterprises to ensure this data is protected, secure, and recoverable. As the market leader in enterprise data protection, Symantec is ideally positioned to help companies leverage the investment in their enterprise data protection environment to deliver enterprise-class reliability and manageability to remote office data protection.”

Centralized Control Improves Manageability and Reliability
Many enterprises today cannot implement or enforce standard data protection polices that cover their corporate data centers and remote offices. In addition, IT organizations cannot control the various backup processes and techniques implemented at remote sites, which can lead to unreliable backups, missed backup windows, and the inability to restore critical data. NetBackup PureDisk unites disparate remote offices into a single protection network so that backup policies can be set and enforced by the centralized corporate data protection team, providing visibility into the entire backup infrastructure. In addition, NetBackup PureDisk eases the administrative burden with a secure, web-based management interface that allows the remote office backup process to be managed centrally in the corporate data center, to cover hundreds, and even thousands of remote offices – and enabling “hands-off” management in the remote office. The web interface allows both administrators and end-users to access, manage, and most importantly, restore data.

Powerful Data Reduction Technology Optimizes Backup Process and Infrastructure
Data is growing at an unprecedented rate, a phenomenon which is compounded by the large amount of duplicate data created and stored within the enterprise. NetBackup PureDisk uses a global single instance storage technology to dramatically reduce both the amount of disk required to store backups and the bandwidth required to support backups. NetBackup PureDisk identifies globally unique files and data segments based on content, not file attributes such as directory or modify date. When changes are made to files, NetBackup PureDisk backs up only the unique segments of changed data, and can identify the uniqueness of data across the entire network of remote offices.

Delivering End-to-End Data Backup Security
NetBackup PureDisk encrypts backup data from the moment it is captured at the remote office, while in transit, and while on disk at both the remote office and central data center, allowing for a secure remote office protection solution. In addition, PureDisk includes a fully-integrated key management system which encrypts each data segment with a unique key, and ensures that administrators and end users only have access to the data they are entitled to. Because key management is integrated natively into backup administration, PureDisk removes the burden of standalone key management.

Designed for Enterprise Scalability and Flexibility
NetBackup PureDisk is designed to support enterprises that want to establish a single backup standard across dozens, hundreds, or even thousands of remote office islands. The product’s scalable architecture includes independent nodes for metadata and content storage, each of which can be scaled horizontally, allowing IT to add more storage without having to interrupt backup jobs in progress. Additionally, the PureDisk technology operates with any supported disk-based storage, providing customers with the flexibility to choose between inexpensive, internal ATA storage or enterprise SAN or NAS networked storage for their data center and remote offices, allowing them to utilize their existing storage and backup resources, resulting in cost savings. To simplify deployment, NetBackup PureDisk is priced on a “per-terabyte” model, based on the actual amount of data stored (after the benefit of data reduction), allowing for simple deployment and maximum cost savings.

A Strategic Component of the NetBackup Roadmap
Symantec intends to leverage the NetBackup PureDisk technology as a core element of its overall enterprise data protection strategy. In its first release, NetBackup PureDisk is a dedicated remote office data protection solution, which can be protected to tape by Veritas NetBackup or 3rd party backup software. In the next release of NetBackup, Symantec intends to deliver full two-way data integration with NetBackup. This integration will allow PureDisk to leverage NetBackup’s capabilities for writing data to tape, and allow NetBackup to backup its existing clients directly to PureDisk, treating PureDisk as a space-optimized disk storage unit under NetBackup.
