A petition to scrap the drop-off charge at Edinburgh Airport is gaining momentum and now holds more than 1,200 signatures.

Earlier this month the Scottish travel hub announced that from October a £1 fee will have to paid by anyone dropping passengers off at the airport.

BAA said that people would still be able to park in the long-stay Edinburgh Airport parking area for free when delivering travellers to the terminals, which is located near the Edinburgh Airport Hilton hotel.

Gordon Dewar, managing director of Edinburgh Airport, told the Scotsman that previously the drop-off area was disorganised and unsafe.

He added that once he leaves his position in three weeks he will have no control over what his successor chooses to do with the area.

Gavin Brown, MSP for Edinburgh South, has spoken out against the charge. In a statement on his website he said: “This drop-off tax is ridiculous and an unfair charge to airport users. I would be very interested to know what consultation, if any, actually took place with passengers.”

Mr Brown added that for many people travelling to the airport on public transport is not an option.
