Vapor Intrusion Issues in Buildings Can Cause Dangerous Health Conditions

Core, one of the most recognized providers of commercial indoor air quality (IAQ) services, utilizes advanced testing methods to determine if vapor intrusion is endangering building occupants.

The migration of volatile chemicals from below ground into buildings is known as vapor intrusion. When these chemicals, which can be comprised of inorganic analytes, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and semi-volatile organic compounds, make their way into buildings they can cause dangerous conditions.

These chemicals in gaseous form can seep through cracks in foundations or sewer lines and enter a building. The EPA reports that the potential health issues vary and are dependent upon the types of chemicals and concentrations of the chemicals. Length of exposure to the chemicals and the overall health of those being exposed are all factors on how building occupants will react to exposure.

Reactions to vapor intrusions can range from minor irritations, such as headaches or nausea, to more significant problems including chronic disease. Extreme cases can even lead to cancer from prolonged exposures.

Core, a renowned provider of indoor air quality services for property owners and building occupants, has the expertise to solve complex vapor intrusion cases. “Vapor intrusion issues can lead to serious health problems and liability concerns for building owners if the situation isn’t properly addressed,” reported Don Makin, Indoor Air Quality Director of Operations for Core. “Often identifying a vapor intrusion problem can be complex and people who think they may be experiencing a vapor intrusion problem need to be sure they are calling on experienced IAQ professionals to identify and resolve the situation. At Core our customers receive the highest quality IAQ investigation possible, which means the air they breathe is going to be safe.”
