Week-long training better equips aid workers for dealing with disasters.

Littleton, CO – As the recent earthquakes in Haiti and Chile have demonstrated, proper disaster training is essential for NGOs, aid workers, mission groups and relief organizations.

As a relief and development organization, Community Aid Relief and Development (CoAid) is committed to responding to disasters in a manner that safeguards the lives of their staff and volunteers, as well as meeting the needs of disaster victims.

Today, CoAid completed a week-long Disaster Assistance Response Training (DART) course run by an organization called Strategic World Impact (SWI) that specializes in working in areas affected by war, disaster and Christian persecution. Courses taught included Disaster Assessment, Trauma Counseling, Helping Without Hurting, Cross Cultural Communication, Understanding Islam, Anti-Terrorism & Hostage Survival, Internet & Media Communications and Missions Preparation.

“This type of training is invaluable for the type of work we do”, said Steve Neill, president of CoAid, a ministry founded in 2008 that works with victims of natural disasters and war worldwide.

CoAid has sent relief teams to Myanmar (Burma), India, Rwanda and Haiti to distribute aid and start development projects.

The DART course included a session on Land Mine Awareness where representatives from the National Guard gave attendees hands-on training to recognize different types of anti-personnel device and how to extract themselves from an area with buried mines.

“We had a few ‘deaths’ on the course because of land mines, including my own,” said Neill. “I let my guard down and snagged a tripwire; the powder charge went off with a loud pop and made us all jump.”

“Our field workers are now more aware of the risks that all aid workers potentially face when dealing with humanitarian situations,” he said.
