Cadmium Found on Popular Fast Food Restaurant’s Glassware

On May 21 the one of the world’s largest fast food chain began offering four drinking glasses with images of a popular movie painted on the outside of the glassware. The enamel used to paint the glasses has since been discovered to contain cadmium.

Most experts agree cadmium is an even more dangerous heavy metal than lead. Cadmium can be extremely toxic even in low concentrations. This raises concerns over its presence in the enamel on the glasses. The material does bio-accumulate and is an environmental hazard. The metal is a known carcinogen and is believed to be associated with numerous cancers. Cadmium, like lead, can also hinder brain development in children.

The restaurant chain reports that the glassware has been tested by an independent third-party laboratory and their test results showed the glassware to be in compliance with applicable state and federal laws. However the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is currently reviewing cadmium standards for consumer products and may change the standards in the near future.

Cadmium made national headlines earlier this year when according to a report from the Associated Press (AP) cadmium showed up in imported Chinese children’s jewelry at alarming levels. The AP had 103 pieces of children’s jewelry that are sold in the United States tested for cadmium. 12 of the items had cadmium levels ranging from 10 to 91% by weight.
