The Co-operative Group has selected seven charities in seven cities to benefit from a £2 million donation in hope to help improve the public opinion of the youth in the UK. Each charity will receive a donation of £280,000 from the Co-operative Foundation.

With the investment in these seven worthwhile causes it is hoped that the perception of youths in our communities will improve as they become more involved in working with adults and the local community as a whole.

The Seven Cities and charities are:
• Birmingham - Envision
• Bristol – The Prince’s Trust
• Cardiff - YWCA
• Glasgow – Young Scot
• London – The Oval House Theatre
• Manchester – The Royal Exchange Theatre
• Newcastle – Regional Youth Work Unit

The donation is the latest involvement the Co-operative group have made as a part of their ‘Truth About Youth’ campaign, the initiative was voted one of the three main concerns a large amount of their members have voted for as a part of the Co-operative Community Plan.

Describing the ‘Truth about Youth’ campaign, Michael Fairclough, Head of Community and Campaigns at The Co-operative Group, said: “Truth About Youth is about helping young people deal with the challenges of growing up in a culture that has widespread negative perceptions of youth and we hope that by working with our seven charity partners and supporting projects which enable young people to work with adults, the media and the wider community, we will be able to make a real difference.”

The Co-operative Group have also recently opened a mock branch of their Co-operative Food hain in the LifeWise educational centre in South Yorkshire. The store imitates a real life retail setting that the Police have used to educate youths about a wide range of social issues such as Retail crime and Anti-social behaviour.

There are many other initiatives that The Co-operative are involved in such as Mobile Phone Recylcing and Tar Sands awareness
