Citizenship Teacher Training Programme rolled out

WEBWIRE

28 March 2006, Schools Minister Andrew Adonis has today announced the roll out of a successful continuing professional development programme (CPD) for Citizenship teachers.

This follows a successful pilot of the scheme run from March to December 2005 and the well received ‘Making Sense of Citizenship’ CPD Handbook which all schools received last month. The scheme will now be extended to offer 1,200 Citizenship CPD places over the next two years, enabling Citizenship teachers to broaden and deepen their subject knowledge.

Citizenship education has been part of primary school education and a compulsory subject in secondary schools since September 2002 and is now the fastest growing GCSE. Pupils learn about a range of issues including democratic practices and how citizens can make themselves effective in public life both locally and nationally. In 2004 a GCSE (short course) in Citizenship Studies was introduced to give pupils the opportunity to obtain a recognised qualification and a breadth of study.

Schools Minister Andrew Adonis said:

“I am delighted to announce this new programme of training for Citizenship teachers. Citizenship remains an important part of a child’s education. Teaching young people in relevant ways how to become active and responsible members of their communities cannot be underestimated.”

“This Government believes that education of Citizenship is central to creating a modern, inclusive society, which is why it is so important that our Citizenship teachers are well supported in their roles and have the opportunities to hone their skills.”
