MANASSAS, VA, March 27, 2006 -- A Lockheed Martin [NYSE: LMT]-sponsored team of students from Battlefield High School recently won the prestigious “Rookie All-Star Award” at the For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology (FIRST) Robotics Regional Competition. The event was hosted by NASA Langley and Virginia Commonwealth University, March 2-4, in Richmond, VA.

FIRST’s “Rookie All-Star Award” recognizes outstanding achievement by the Battlefield High School “Robocats” across a broad range of projects they were invited to produce. It also salutes the team’s well-rounded approach to using their diverse skills and talents. As a result, the Robocats will go on to compete at the FIRST Robotics National Championship at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta, April 27-29.

“The Robocats exemplified a strong partnership effort between Lockheed Martin, Prince William County Schools and Battlefield High School to inspire students to learn more about science, engineering and technology,” said Gail Drake, a member of the Information Technology and Programming Faculty at Battlefield High School.

"It has been a delight to see the energy, creativity and enthusiasm of our county’s school system, faculty and students channeled into a scientific and business leadership program as rewarding and fun as FIRST robotics,” said Blake Ross, a FIRST mentor-volunteer and computer systems design engineer at Lockheed Martin’s facility in Manassas. “I’m looking forward to our 2007 season already.”

A multinational event, the FIRST Robotics Competition teams technology professionals and young people together to solve engineering design problems in an intense and competitive way. Teams participate from Brazil, Canada, Ecuador, Israel, Mexico, the U.K., and almost every U.S. state. In 2006, FIRST will reach more than 28,000 high-school-aged young people, participating on over 1,125 teams at 33 regional events.

Headquartered in Bethesda, Md., Lockheed Martin employs about 135,000 people worldwide and is principally engaged in the research, design, development, manufacture, integration and sustainment of advanced technology systems, products and services. The corporation reported 2005 sales of $37.2 billion.
