Los Alamitos, CA

In April a Colorado grand jury indicted a man for claiming to be a certified asbestos inspector, improperly performing air testing and falsifying laboratory results. The grand jury charged that the individual contributed to the release of asbestos fibers that threatened local area residents.

The indicted individual worked for a local company from late 2007 until early 2008 where his primary responsibility was testing for asbestos in an Elizabeth, Colorado mobile home park. Three mobile homes were reported to have been demolished based on fraudulent testing showing no asbestos was present. Due to the falsified reports, demolition permits were issued.

Asbestos can be found in a wide range of common building materials in older buildings including insulation, flooring, ceilings, roofing, siding, fire coating materials and a host of other products. The disposal of asbestos is regulated and individuals and companies are subject to prosecution if asbestos regulations are not followed.

Aside from making sure that asbestos materials are properly disposed of, people need to be aware that during abatement or demolition projects asbestos can be easily aerosolized. Without the proper safety precautions asbestos can be inhaled during these projects which could increase one’s chances of developing deadly lung cancer in the future.

The Clean Air Act and the National Emission Standard for Hazardous Air Pollutants requires contractors to follow certain steps during projects that involve asbestos. These requirements include actions that must be taken before work commences, during renovations and to ensure proper waste disposal.

LA Testing, an affiliate of EMSL Analytical and a leading provider of asbestos testing services, provides testing solutions to protect people and the environment from asbestos exposure. “The situation in Colorado left area resident unnecessarily exposed to potentially dangerous asbestos inhalation risks,” reported Ben Sublasky, National Director of Client Services for LA Testing and EMSL Analytical.
