Ground-level Ozone is Harmful to People, Pets and Plants

EMSL Analytical utilizes OSHA Method 214 to test for ozone levels.

Ozone consists of three oxygen atoms and in the upper atmosphere helps protect the planet from harmful ultraviolet light. However, ozone in the lower atmosphere is an air pollutant that can cause respiratory problems for humans and animals and can cause damage to photosynthesis in some sensitive plants.

Tropospheric ozone, also known as low level ozone, is recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as a pollutant. It can be generated in populated areas by sunlight reacting with hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxides in the air. Both industry and vehicle exhaust are major contributors of these gases.

In May of 2008 the EPA lowered its ozone standard from 80 ppb to 75 ppb, the WHO recommends 51 ppb. High levels of ozone are known to cause respiratory problems and reduce lung function. It is also a trigger for some people who suffer from asthma. Many metropolitan areas across the United States monitor and post information about ozone levels.

EMSL Analytical, one of the nation’s largest air testing laboratories, provides testing solutions for ozone utilizing OSHA Method 214. Using this method an air sample is collected with a calibrated sampling pump and a two-piece polystyrene cassette containing two nitrite-impregnated glass fiber filters (IGFFs). During collection, ozone reacts with the nitrite impregnated on the filter collection device and converts it to nitrate via oxidation. Ozone can be sampled by this method at 0.25 liters per minute for 8 hours for a volume of 120 liters, yielding a detection limit in air of 8 ppb.

“Ozone testing for the workplace and in residential areas is an important procedure in many major cities across the country,” reported Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President for EMSL Analytical. “Our industrial hygiene laboratory has not only the state-of-the-art instrumentation necessary, but also the technical expertise to help with any ozone sampling investigation.”
