No more electrical and electronic scrap in domestic waste - Vodafone has been recycling mobile phones for three years now

WEBWIRE

Düsseldorf, 23 March 2006. Municipal authorities are beginning by tomorrow required by law to collect old electrical and electronic devices such as TV sets, DVD players and mobile phones free of charge. The scrap devices are then returned to the manufacturers for environmentally-friendly disposal. This service started on 23.03.2005, when the German Electrical and Electronic Equipment Act came into force. It regulates the recovery and recycling of electrical and electronic scrap. Vodafone has been offering its customers the opportunity to return their old phones free of charge and contribute at the same time to a charity project for three years now. Vodafone donates 5 euros to charity organisations throughout Germany for every mobile phone that is handed back. Around 150,000 mobiles have been collected up to now, which means donations to charity of over EUR 745,000. The project is being continued.

Municipal authorities are beginning by tomorrow required under the new German Electrical and Electronic Equipment Act to cooperate with manufacturers in the process of recovering and disposing of electrical and electronic scrap in an environmentally friendly way. The new law also means that consumers are no longer permitted to throw their old electrical and electronic equipment away with domestic waste. The objectives are to prevent waste and to promote the recycling of valuable materials. These are also the declared objectives of Vodafone, the first ever network operator to initiate a mobile phone collection and recycling project in 2003. The old phones are put through a detailed technical inspection before either being reused or broken down into their component parts in an environmentally-friendly process by Vodafone’s recycling partner, Greener Solutions.

For every mobile phone that is handed back, Vodafone donates 5 euros to charity organisations throughout Germany. Vodafone will be continuing the mobile phone recycling project for the sake of the environment and to support good causes. Mobile phone owners can now protect the environment and do good works for charity at the same time.

This is how it works. You can pick up the recycling bags at all the Vodafone Shops or order them free of charge by calling 0800-1721212. Then you fill out the address label, put it inside the bag with the old phone and either hand it in at a Vodafone Shop or put it in a post-box.
