EMSL Analytical offers six testing solutions to test properties to determine if they have Chinese drywall problems.

Westmont, NJ

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has received thousands of reports from residents in over 37 states and territories that people believe health problems they are suffering are due to problems related to Chinese drywall. Most of these homes were constructed or renovated during 2006 and 2007. The CPSC, along with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), released a statement this month that recommends removing problem drywall from homes.

They specifically stated on an April 2 news release, “Based on scientific study of the problem to date, HUD and CPSC recommend consumers remove all possible problem drywall from their homes, and replace electrical components and wiring, gas service piping, fire suppression sprinkler systems, smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms. Taking these steps should help eliminate both the source of the problem drywall and corrosion-damaged components that might cause a safety problem in the home.”

Since early in 2009 there have been numerous media reports about imported Chinese drywall causing unpleasant odors, damage to building materials and making people sick across the country from poor indoor air quality (IAQ). What is not clear at this time is who will end up paying for this situation.

EMSL Analytical, one of the nation’s premier environmental and materials testing laboratories has been busy helping builders, environmental consultants and the general public test samples of suspicious drywall. EMSL Analytical has developed a series of tests specifically for Chinese drywall samples which start at only $61.

“Chinese drywall problems are happening in homes across the country, but especially in Gulf Coast areas such as Florida and Louisiana,” reported Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President at EMSL Analytical. “Our Materials Testing Division has been on the forefront of developing and offering testing solutions to help identify problem drywall for everyone from home owners to environmental and building sciences professionals,” he continued.
