In March of this year, President Obama signed into law new healthcare legislation that also included other provisions. Restaurant chains with 20 or more locations will soon have to post the calorie content of their food. The new regulations also require that food products in vending machines be properly labeled with their calorie content.

This new national policy requires that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration propose specific regulations within one year. Depending on the outcome of potential legal challenges it is unknown exactly when the new calorie labeling requirements will go into effect, but the changes are coming.

The legislation will require restaurants to display calorie content information for standard menu items and per serving calorie amounts of food items from buffets and salad bars. Drive through menu signs will also be required to post calorie information.

The purpose behind the legislation is to help combat the growing national waistline by informing consumers about their calorie intake. Similar regulations had already been imposed in New York City and several states also had legislation set to go into effect in 2011.

EMSL Analytical, with over 30 testing facilities across the United States and Canada, has been providing calorie analysis of food products for years. The company also provides nutritional labeling, food pathogen and other food related testing services. “Thousands of restaurant chains are going to be affected by these new regulations,” reported Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President at EMSL. “EMSL Analytical can provide affordable calorie testing solutions for restaurants and food manufacturers so that they are prepared to comply with the new federal regulations.”

The laboratory has a dedicated food and consumer products website at www.foodtestinglab.com. There people can learn about food testing and even order a Foodborne Illnesses poster online. To learn more about EMSL Analytical please visit www.EMSL.com, call (800)220-3675 or email info@EMSL.com.
