Research Reveals Internet’s Marketing Potential to UK Solicitors

A report published in the Law Society Gazette has revealed that, following recommendations from friends, internet searches are Britain’s second most popular method for finding a solicitor.

The YouGov poll, which asked 2,266 people how they would go about finding a solicitor for conveyancing or advising on a will, found that 21% of the sample would use search engines such as Google, a further 10% would use specialist web directories of solicitors, and 4% would ask contacts on social networking sites such as Facebook.

The study suggests that the internet must play an important role in the future marketing strategies of law firms throughout the UK if they are to continue to be successful.

“Companies that do not invest in raising their on-line profile will receive less calls and enquiries than a firm that does - it’s as simple as that” suggests Simon McCrum, of Oxford-based Darbys Solicitors.

“Simon is right, but purely investing in online profile is not necessarily enough to create a successful online presence” continues Tim Roberts, MD of I-COM, a Manchester-based internet marketing firm which specialises in helping law firms make the most out of the internet.

“At I-COM, we have experience of working with high-profile law firms throughout the UK. We understand how people search for legal services online, and use that understanding to generate a fantastic ROI for our legal clients.”

The YouGov poll also found that just 16% said they would use the Yellow pages or another directory to find a solicitor, further evidence which suggests a move away from more traditional forms of advertising.
