Designers Honored for Bringing Android™ Platform to MIPS® Architecture

SUNNYVALE, Calif. - MIPS Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq: MIPS), a leading provider of industry-standard processor architectures and cores for home entertainment, communications, networking and portable multimedia markets, today announced it was named a finalist in TechInsights’ EE Times Sixth Annual Creativity in Electronics (ACE) Awards (www.eetimes-ace.com) for Design Team of the Year. MIPS Technologies’ design team for its AndroidTM on MIPS® initiative was selected due to its innovation, efficiency and creativity. The group of engineers within MIPS Technologies initiated the important effort to make Android a viable platform for a wide range of consumer electronics devices.

“In the next few years, we’ll see an explosion of Android-based devices for the digital living room, driven by consumer demand for rich internet content delivered on any screen,” said Art Swift, vice president of marketing, MIPS Technologies. “It was the innovative thinking and vision of a small engineering team here at MIPS Technologies that galvanized us to leverage our existing strengths and technologies throughout the company, and enlist the assistance of licensees and partners to drive Android into a broad range of consumer devices. In a matter of months, we were able to quickly and nimbly deliver a solution that resounds strongly with our customers.”

The Android platform was designed to provide rich applications and functionality for mobile handsets. Now, because of its well-defined software stack that enables easy application development and portability across embedded devices, it is penetrating other consumer markets. This ongoing effort is driven largely by MIPS Technologies and its community. Leveraging its leadership in the digital home, MIPS Technologies is leveraging Android to bring a rich internet experience to devices such as DTVs, set-top boxes, Blu-ray players and more. In August 2009, MIPS made the source code publicly available, and since that time more than 3,000 people have joined the Android on MIPS community.

The EE Times Annual Creativity in Electronics (ACE) Awards celebrates the creators of technology who demonstrate leadership and innovation in the global industry and shape the world we live in. Awards will be presented on April 27th during the Embedded Systems Conference Silicon Valley. Awards are presented in 11 categories and are judged by the editors and a blue-ribbon panel of industry experts, comprised of the leading voices of academia, industry and Wall Street executives.

“The 2010 finalists represent the execution of forward-thinking technologies and creativity that captures the imagination of consumers, illustrating the influence that electronics and embedded design professionals have on today’s culture,” said Junko Yoshida, editor in chief, EE Times.
