PALO ALTO, Calif., HP announced that the Hewlett-Packard Company Foundation has made a donation of $500,000 for relief and recovery efforts following the earthquake that struck Chile last Saturday.

The grant will be made to two organizations actively involved in the relief efforts, the American Red Cross and Doctors Without Borders, which will receive $250,000 each.

Additionally, HP has initiated a global fundraising program among its employees in all countries where it operates. The company has launched a dedicated website for employee donations, and the Hewlett-Packard Company Foundation has committed up to $250,000 to match eligible employee contributions in a bid to raise an additional $500,000. These funds will support the disaster relief efforts of various relief organizations, including the American Red Cross and Doctors Without Borders.

The Hewlett-Packard Company Foundation provides disaster relief support throughout the world. It recently donated $500,000 to aid Haiti relief efforts following the earthquake that devastated the country last January. In September 2009, the Foundation donated $350,000 to help the victims of Typhoon Ondoy in the Philippines.

The Foundation is chaired by Marcela Perez de Alonso, a Chilean native, who is executive vice president of Human Resources at HP. She is closely following the events in Chile as she has relatives in the country. “Our thoughts are with all the families that have fallen victim to this tragedy and with the terribly trying challenges my country and my people are now faced with. We are all extremely shocked by this tragedy and are committed to supporting recovery efforts through such reputed organizations as the American Red Cross and Doctors Without Borders.”

The funds donated by the Foundation are intended to support short-term relief as well as help the longer term reconstruction work needed to rebuild the country. “The road to recovery will be a long one, and we are working with our customers, partners and employees to provide ongoing support,” said Perez de Alonso.
