Specialist health care centre to bring medical tourism to Iceland

WEBWIRE

A new health care medical tourism project is set to begin in the second quarter of 2010 at the Asbru Enterprise Park in Keflavik, Iceland, by the Kadeco group.

The Asbru Enterprise Park, located next to Keflavik International Airport, is expected to have considerable renovations to an ex-military hospital based on the park’s campus. The hospital specialising in medical advancements such as cosmetic surgery, fat-removal and joint replacements will hold three operating theatres, 35 hospital beds and all together have the ability of treating up to 4,000 patients per year

The location for the health care facility was chosen mainly because of the area’s vast knowledge and experience of tourism. It is also believed that up to 300 new jobs will be created by the redevelopment of the health care facility and its related services.

“It is important for us to receive an injection into the economy at this difficult time and also a pleasure to note that the timing of the venture is firmly on track. Hundreds of new jobs will be created, there are vast tourism-related possibilities, and new and related educational opportunities will arise at Keilir, the Atlantic Centre for Excellence, which is situated near the hospital,” commented Arni Sigfusson, Mayor of Reykjanesbaer.

The rise in health care and medical tourism will be a precious source of income for Iceland. It is already clear that foreign patients looking for specialist medical treatments outside of their home countries will often travel with family or friends and remain in the same location for a few days following a procedure. This can prompt revenues in foreign currencies of up to 3.5 billion ISK per year.
