Flow Dynamics Expands Flow Laboratory To Ensure Timely Flowmeter Calibrations

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz., — Flow Dynamics, Inc., a leading provider of primary standard, NIST-traceable calibrations for all types of flowmeters, has expanded its Scottsdale, Ariz., flow laboratory, in order to ensure high quality calibration services with the industry’s quickest turnaround time.

The Flow Dynamics lab recently added another positive displacement liquid primary standard calibrator, PDCL 400 GPM, with production features intended to increase calibration capacity throughput. In addition, the facility has implemented the most accurate kinematic viscosity measurement system available.

According to Flow Dynamics’ Vice President of Marketing, Ron Madison, the new PDCL 400 is a production calibrator identical in design to units sold directly to customers. He commented, “As users of our products, we have taken advantage of our inborn knowledge to design the best performing calibrator offered in the industry. This equipment is used daily to perform high-precision calibrations for our customer base. Our machines typically last 50+ years, with minimal maintenance and downtime. Their utilization of an emersion heater and cold water temperature exchanger controls the desired fluid viscosity, while minimizing fluid blending.”

Flow Dynamics offers the most precise viscosity measurements in the metrology industry to complement the accuracy of its calibrations. Kinematic viscosity measurement is as critical as the primary standard used to produce and measure precision flow. This is especially true when developing Universal Viscosity Curves (UVCs) for turbine flowmeters. Unlike traditional capillary viscometers that use time methods and temperature baths requiring hours of sampling, Flow Dynamics employs the latest technology measuring kinematic viscosity per ASTM D7042 equivalent to ISO 3104 and ASTM D445. Temperature is measured based upon the Peltier thermostat principle, enabling a repeatability of 0.1 percent of reading at a rate of 30 samples per hour. This compares with capillary systems of 1 percent of reading and torque methods of 1 percent full scale.

The PDCL 400 flow calibrator, paired with the proper method of measuring kinematic viscosity, produces the highest precision calibrations for Flow Dynamics’ customer base.
