Wangechi Mutu named Deutsche Bank’s 2010 artist of the year

New York / Frankfurt am Main, Today Deutsche Bank is honoring Wangechi Mutu as the Deutsche Bank 2010 Artist of the Year. The Bank is presenting the award for the first time this year, opening up a new chapter in its commitment to art.

Friedhelm Hütte, Global Head of Art, Deutsche Bank, commented: “With the Artist of the Year award we want to underline the philosophy of Deutsche Bank’s art program: promoting young contemporary artists from all over the world.”

Born in Nairobi, Kenya, in 1972, Mutu is one of the world’s premier African contemporary artists. Her works have been on view at Tate Modern and the Museum Kunsthalle in Vienna. She was selected as Artist of the Year on the recommendation of the Deutsche Bank Global Art Advisory Council, a committee consisting of four internationally renowned curators: Okwui Enwezor, Hou Hanru, Udo Kittelmann and Nancy Spector.

The Deutsche Guggenheim in Berlin will be presenting works by Mutu, who lives in New York, in Germany for the first time from April 30 to June 13, 2010.
