Tieto improves efficiency of raw materials handling at Smurfit Kappa Kraftliner

Tieto has supplied a system to Smurfit Kappa Kraftliner in Piteå, Sweden, for handling incoming recovered paper and white pulp bales. It is called the Roaming Object Coordinating System (ROCS), is based on Microsoft technology and is a modern stock positioning solution that makes raw materials handling more efficient.

“We constantly work on enhancing the efficiency of our processes, and ROCS plays a part in how we handle incoming material,” says Staffan Persson, manager of the raw materials warehouse at Smurfit Kappa Kraftliner, Piteå. “Both the weighing procedure and supplier invoice handling are completely automated and correct. Also, the prices of forest raw materials have continually increased in recent years, so it’s important for us to optimise the turnover rate of the fibre. Using ROCS we can also ensure that we obtain input material of more uniform quality for production, which facilitates later stages of the production process,” Staffan continues. “We follow up operations in our information system, TIPS Info - also supplied by Tieto.”

“The forest industry involves major challenges regarding raw materials and energy costs,” explains Lars-Göran Envall, manager of operations in the Forest division at Tieto Sweden AB. “Our customers prefer ROCS thanks to its proven functionality and the way that it helps to increase profitability. ROCS also reduces the total distance driven by truck by cutting the number of incorrect transport runs and thereby lowering trucks’ environmental impact.”

The ROCS system consists of four fundamental components:

* All communication takes place via messages, which creates full transaction security.
* GPS positioning or area indication via touch screen.
* Weighing device/sensor connected to machinery or lifting equipment means that the system always detects when the driver moves goods or unloads them.
* Flexible assortment handling function, in which you can create assortments and input their definitions and groupings, which will then be displayed on a map or in reports.
