Funds will help Red Cross prepare for future disasters

St. Louis – In response to the tragic earthquake in Haiti, Monsanto Company is supporting the American Red Cross with a gift of $50,000. This donation is for the Disaster Relief Fund, which allows the American Red Cross to respond to disasters by providing immediate services like food, shelter and emotional support.

The Disaster Relief Fund supports the critical infrastructure that makes Red Cross disaster response possible. “The Disaster Relief Fund is the backbone of the Disaster Services program. This generous donation will support warehouses, call centers, vehicle maintenance, volunteer training, travel costs and communications for all types of disasters – like the recent earthquake in Haiti, and those closer to home,” said Cindy Erickson, chief executive officer of the St. Louis Area Chapter. “We are thankful for Monsanto’sgift, and appreciative of their confidence in our mission.”

Monsanto Company has a long history of partnering with the American Red Cross to prepare and respond to disasters. “We want to ensure that no matter where an earthquake, hurricane, flood or any other large-scale disaster strikes, the Red Cross can respond immediately,” said Deborah Patterson, president of the Monsanto Fund.

In addition to the corporate contribution, the Monsanto Fund – the philanthropic arm of Monsanto Company – has initiated a global disaster match program that will equal employee contributions dollar-for-dollar in support of the ongoing effort in Haiti.

The American Red Cross is continuing the massive relief operation in Haiti with support from teams around the world. Red Cross workers are establishing field hospitals, restoring water and sanitation systems, distributing supplies and helping survivors find their missing family and loved ones. It is clear that Haiti will need massive long-term relief and development, and the Red Cross will be one of the first to arrive and one of the last to leave.

People who want to help those affected by the Haitian earthquake can make a donation via www.RedCross.org or by calling 314.516.2800. Mobile donors can text “Haiti” to 90999 to send a $10 donation to the Red Cross.
