Center Made Possible by $1,000,000 AT&T Grant to Fund Volunteer Resource Center, Teen Program Room, Training Space and Administrative Offices

San Antonio, Texas, March 15, 2006, The AT&T Foundation today announced a $1,000,000 grant to the Girl Scouts of the San Antonio Area, Inc. to benefit its capital campaign, expanding the organization’s capacity to serve girls through new and improved facilities.

The grant will help fund a new Leadership Center to give local Girl Scouts a safe, easily-accessible, centrally-located area for camp training, weekend overnights, troop meetings and programs. The site will also house an expanded resource center and shop, cookie warehousing and administrative offices. The Girl Scouts of the San Antonio Area will also add a specially-equipped mobile resource bus to reach out to girls in the surrounding areas so they will have the opportunity to participate in the center’s programming and hands-on activities.

The Leadership Center will be built on 6.7 acres of wooded land within San Antonio city limits. The well-rounded offering of programs offered at the center will include technology, the arts, leadership development and nature studies.

“The city of San Antonio is fortunate to have an outstanding organization that helps to build character and skills in young girls in this community,” said City Councilman Kevin Wolff. “It’s wonderful to see the Girl Scouts of the San Antonio Area work to support the creation of a facility that will benefit the lives of so many.”

“By achieving our goal of $8.5 million, we will expand our facilities, increase our resources and be able to include more girls in our programs,” said Capital Campaign Co-Chair, Charles E. Cheever, Jr. “In return, we’ll strengthen our community and help all girls become self-confident, resourceful and responsible women — our leaders of tomorrow.”

“We hope that this new Leadership Center will serve to make happy and meaningful memories for everyone involved with the Girl Scouts—staff, parents, volunteers and the girls themselves, ” said AT&T executive director of external affairs, Doug Heath. “We’re grateful for Councilman Wolff’s focus on issues impacting women and girls and for his dedication to the Girl Scouts of San Antonio in helping to make this project a reality.”

Today’s official site unveiling and special ceremony was part of a celebration to honor National Girl Scout Week — a yearly celebration to renew the organization’s commitment to help girls grow strong and realize their own potential. Each year, Girl Scout Week commemorates the 1912 founding of Girl Scouting in the United States by Juliette Gordon Low. In the years since, the organization has helped shape the lives of more than 4 million women.

The new AT&T Foundation, the philanthropic arm of AT&T Inc., supports programs that build communities and improve access to information technologies, technology training and professional skills development.
